What they should've done instead is make the seat bottom fold up, like in many pickup trucks.

Idk about the current ones, but on my dads classic 911's when you fold down the seats it makes the perfect platform for the dog to chill under the targa window.

I like the design the way it is. It lets you put heavy stuff on top of the seat back without hurting the leather seats.

Plus with a pickup you can access the floor of the truck easier. With the 911 it's hard to reach the floor but easy to place stuff on top of the seat backs.

But then you couldn't use the pass-through to the trunk!

Why don't they just use a tri-fold design? Have the seat back fold in half... the top half folds downwards and then the whole seat back slide towards the back of the car, while the bottom tilts upwards and snaps in so that the seats disappear entirely into the back of the car, thus allowing one to use every last inch of space available behind the front seats...

Just a thought...

exactly this. the back seats in the 911 serve two purposes:

1. lower insurance premiums

2. provide a place to put a set of golf clubs

the back seats in the 996 and newer Carreras are actually serviceable, presuming you only date skinny girls.

Mine has those. I dig em. Makes a nice handy little shelf, and you can wedge a water bottle in there so you can reach it from the drivers seat. Because no cup holders.

It's funny how often they actually come in handy! I have a 997 and there has been a few times I was glad I had the back seats:

1. Had to transport a mother and her baby once. The baby seat mounted properly in the back seat and I was able to transport them safely.

2. There have been a few times when I picked up a friend and he failed to mention that his roommate or friend wanted to come too. It's no problem to fit an adult or two in the back seat if the trip is going to be really short. Better to be uncomfortable for 5 minutes than walk 30 minutes.

3. I was at a wedding once and gave a couple friends a ride to their hotel. Both were over 6'. The person who sat in back was super uncomfortable but were in the boondocks and there were no taxis anywhere. I saved their butts because they were too drunk to drive.

4. I was able to take my ex gf and her 8 year old daughter out to lunch in the Porsche. I had another car but her daughter got a kick out of riding in a Porsche. Kids are perfectly comfortable back there.

All that being said I can see why the OP made this comment. If the 911 had longer doors then it would be neat if the seats folded up. But I think the way they work is as good as it can get considering how short the doors are. When you fold the front seats down you can access the rear seat backs but it's hard to reach the rear floor. If the doors were longer then the configuration would be more like a pickup truck that has the rear suicide doors.

I guess a 996 is in my future, in that case...

While that sounds great on paper, you have to remember that German Porsche engineers combatted this issue. I think they chose the most efficient system.

I thought these were cool when I bought it a few months ago. They fold in hard and then lift upwards from the middle and click into the roof. Cool? Yeah, sure. But they cut the side-to-side size allowance by 3 feet when they're up.

You can have something short and broad (stack it on lowered and folded seats) or narrow and tall (seats folded and raised). But not both. Also, the side opening trunk, that's annoying as shit.

Uses I can remember:

1.Dog seat (recommended)

2. perfect size for a tool box if it breaks down

3. storing the targa top (not recommended)

4. You kids backpacks during the school run

5. Easily any Child under 13 years old

6. Hilariously any Child over 13 years old

etc.

Haha it is funny to put older kids in back. Even if a 15 year old is uncomfortable he won't complain. He'll be too excited about riding in a Porsche 911!

Btw the new addition passed doge's inspection. The car ended up being a 1969 and not a 1972 model.

My dad is so lucky with his finds...

He got a hell of a deal on an engine too. I'll take a pic for you later.

Some guy was paying a shop to refurbish an engine and ran out of funds. The thing is clean
